Sensory Integration Services for Infants and Young Children

Maximising Young Children’s Interaction with the Environment

Our mission is to provide assessment and treatment to infants and young children that experience difficulties with arousal, attention, motor skills, and behavioural regulation.

Sensory Processing in Early Years

Every day we receive a great deal of information from our senses. Our senses provide us with the information about our body and the environment around us. When this information flows in a well-organised manner, it enables the brain to form perception, behaviours, and learning.

A child needs an enriched physical environment, a responsive social environment, and opportunities to successfully respond to and interact with the world. Sensory processing in the early years lays the foundation for establishing:

Sleeping patterns
Eating patterns
Arousal
Attention
Motor skills
Social interaction
Play skills

Regulatory Disorders in Infants & Young Children

Children who are unable to experience and respond to their environments effectively because of inadequate abilities to process sensory information run the risk of missing foundational life experiences. The difficulty with sensory processing interferes with the child’s ability to manage a calm, alert, or emotionally positive state. The following are some common symptoms of regulatory disorders:

Sleeping and eating difficulties
Difficulty self-calming
Emotional instability (feelings of fussiness, unhappiness, & irritability)
Limited attention
Distress with changes in routines
Sensitivity to touch and movement
Little babbling or vocalizing
Problems with motor skills

Services Offered

If you are concerned that your child is significantly more irritable than average or may have difficulty with sleeping, eating, attending, and regulating behaviour, you may wish to seek professional assessment by an occupational therapist that specialises in sensory integration. At Hopscotch we are committed to helping parents understand their children and maximise children’s interaction with the environment. The following services are offered:
